How documentation can be a tool of empowerment? How can it educate, challenge, inspire? Well, SIGNIFIED project is a great example of it!
SIGNIFIED is a multi-media archive of LGBTQ testimony and documentary series featuring the work of queer artists and activists. The creation of this project came from a desire to provide a common space and language to examine existing power structures as well as document radical forms of artistic creation, collective education, gender re-imaginings and the transformation of State mechanisms that police queer bodies and communities.
SIGNIFIED premiered their first season of interviews with The Guggenheim Lab in Fall 2011 and has since expanded their work internationally conducting over twenty interviews in Argentina, Colombia and Cuba. The series is available in both English and Spanish and is currently developing an online mapping database to serve as a geographic visualization and historic documentation of queer media and movements.
